Links for July 31st through August 4th:
- Britain To Put CCTV Cameras Inside Private Homes | Gadget Lab | Wired.com – what?! See link below for thoughts on this.
Seriously is this true?
- Schools are increasingly installing CCTV cameras in classrooms | Education | The Guardian – not sure I would have put up with cameras in classrooms just as the general rule. Corridors? Maybe and if a teacher wanted to record the odd lesson for technique improvement – maybe. But fixed and permanent? Definitely not. I used to scoff at those that would go on about us welcoming a Big Brother state, but now I begin to wonder if some people read 1984 and took it as a informative guideline on how to successfully run a society.
- BBC – Magazine Monitor: Monday’s Quote of the Day – "I like Alexander Graham Bell because, having invented the phone, he realised how annoying it was and refused to have one in his study" – Sandi Toksvig
Ms Toksvig does not go on to explain whether Mr Bell would have approved of using phones to play music out loud on the bus.
- Are Judd Apatow’s Movies Just Chick Flicks for Dudes? How Funny People, Knocked Up and the 40-Year-Old Virgin allow men to explore complex emotions. – Interesting discussion on Judd Apatow's films, be sure to read parts one and two also. Basically talking about whether his films are sexist or not. I'm not sure they are, but they are definately from a male point of view – which makes sense – Judd Apatow is a man. However they only really focus on his movies, what about the central character of Lindsay Weir in Freaks & Geeks?
- Macbeth – Theatre – Theatre and Dance – Greater Manchester’s CityLife – Going to see this on Sunday – must remember our little stools to sit on.
