Saturday in Manchester

13th October, 2009 by Daniel

Sometimes Manchester makes me laugh. It’s been quite a month for the city really, or it would seem so from the outside. They it feels for me here is the city just gets on with it. It’s difficult to tell what the voice of Manchester is sometimes, I think the even those with their ears closest to the ground don’t know what the city thinks.
The big events this month have all been concerned with external factors, things Manchester isn’t all that interested in.

Tory Party Conference:
I was fascinated by it for all it’s politicking and manoeuvring for the general election next year but I don’t think Manchester was, apart from a tiny section being cordoned off – a section that most people don’t use anyways – the Midland Hotel and the G-Mex. The MEN was loving the Champagne stuff which was starting to irritate me, if people want to drink let them. It’s their party of the year. Just last week I was reading about an MEN leaving do where they’d had the Grapes at capacity nearly all day – what no news to write about that day? Couldn’t just have a pint at the end of the day?

UAF & EDL Protest:
I wasn’t there so I don’t know, but it seemed to me pretty well confined to Piccadilly Gardens and yes it would have disrupted some shops but I think most of the shopping carried on regardless – it was nothing like what the Glasweigans felt upset about their TV screen failing last summer but I think there that something like that would have happened regardless the amount of alcohol I saw being consumed.
With the protests I thought that the reporting was as bad as those involved, all trying to hype it up. If you want to protest of course you can and I’m glad that Manchester really just ignored the whole thing.

So the council did a consultation and found that the people didn’t really want a city wide mayor, but then the MEN did a survey and found that they did? How does that work? It’s like the congestion charge again, the for groups trying to convince everybody that the majority thought it was a good idea. OK then we’ll have a vote – oh right yeah it’s a massive NO, thanks but actually we like to drive around here, we pay enough for the privilege as it is. (imho by all means close off deansgate or something like that).

I forgot to mention, went out on Saturday for Helen’s birthday and had a great time and found a new favourite bar (Mojo). Sunday was a write-off.
