  2. Bit of a day

    March 18, 2011 by Daniel

Phew! So yesterday was quite a day in the arts/culture world. Or for me it was anyway. Bit of a month actually if you include Radiohead surprise release of ‘King of Limbs‘.

Yesterday was the announcement of who will be appearing at the Manchester International Festival. The festival is a bit of a curiosity for me. I’ve been keen on seeing something (it returns every second year and this will be the third time round) but the tickets have either been sold out, a bit pricey or not so attractive. But this year they announced someone I couldn’t bear to miss, someone I’d promised myself I’d see next time they were in Manchester (which isn’t often). Björk is one of my favourite artists, one i’ve even managed to get Kate to listen to. So i’m very much looking forward to it in July and it will be interesting to see what she does for it and the venue as well (the air & space hall at the MOSI).

The other thing yesterday that happened was another I’d been looking forward to for a while. Danny Boyle’s production of Frankenstein Live was always going to be a bit special. With two great actors I’d hoped to see it in London when I first heard about it but then I found that it was impossible to get tickets for. Then I saw that the National Theatre was including it in their series of shows broadcast live to cinemas around the world by satellite. So I managed to get in early and get some tickets. Last night I think it was completely sold out and as expected it was fantastic!

Also you can get the score (by Underworld) here

  5. Awesome Weekend

    March 7, 2011 by Daniel

Had an awesome weekend. We’d planned on a just a quiet weekend at home and I suppose it was but it was a bit busier than we normally would be for a quiet weekend.
On friday we’d planned to meet some friends for dinner and then go to the cinema but ended up beforehand meeting one of Kate’s friends from work who was leaving. So we had a couple in Wetherspoons before going over to the Rock for Pizza Express.

After a nice meal we went over for the 9.45 showing of the Adjustment Bureau. Which was a decent film, not a classic but worth seeing. Any Phillip K. Dick story is probably worth seeing – I think that it might have been done better though and I’m thinking they must have changed the ending quite a bit.
On Saturday we decided to go to the market to pick up a few things, but we decided to walk in a slightly different route to normal (we’re still exploring our adopted hometown). So we found the bike path, which is part of National Cycle Route 6 don’t you know and happened upon a school we didn’t even know existed. I mean i’d seen a couple of the buildings from it from the tram but I didn’t know it was a whole separate other school.

So we went around town and the market finally picking up some coaxial cable from Wilkinsons (a steal at 28p/metre!). Ever since we moved in when we got Sky i’d been meaning to wire the box to the tv upstairs and use Sky Magic Eye to be able to control it. Turns out it works pretty well once you find the right setting on the box and enable it (SERVICES 4 0 1 SELECT).

Anyways, we met Helen in town and the call went out to go to the pub. I like to try out new places but Kate and Helen are a bit more reluctant. But I managed to convince them to try out Wyldes which turns out is a nice big Holts pub. We sat on a comfy sofa and just chatted for a couple of hours. Now this is what Saturday afternoons were invented for!
Helen gave us a lift back home and we did a couple of bits and bobs (this was when I set up the coax cable).

Sunday started out slow but then it was mostly little odd jobs for most of the day. I’d decided to investigate why our dishwasher insists on pumping water onto the kitchen floor – turns out it’s a mystery. I’ve taken apart the drain and found no blockage so put it back together and put a bit of cleaner down it for good measure. So we’ll see how it goes.
Then it was some puttering about in the garden, mowing the lawn while Kate did some planting.

Oh I almost forgot, we made Sausages! Pretty cool. Amazed how well they came out. Kate blogged about it here.
Later we had ourselves a curry (first in ages!) and watched some more of The Promise which has been quite grim but fascinating.

Next weekend or at some point I now need to find a way to tidy the coax trailing through the house. I think i’m going to drill a small hole in the living room ceiling up to the bedroom and get to the tv from under the floor there. Might as well put in some cat5 for the Blu-Ray player whilst we’re at it too I think. Especially as we’re going to want it in the spare room next to the bedroom for a computer desk (when we get round to getting a desk!).

    Ah weekends. So short 🙁
