Bjork – Biophilia – Manchester International Festival

4th July, 2011 by Daniel

Campfield Market Hall, Manchester, 3rd July 2011

Rodney asked if I was going to blog about it. I wasn’t but I thought i’d collate some reviews of it and put some pictures up. We weren’t allowed to take pictures during the performance (despite some ignoring the signs anyways).

  • Observer – Kitty Empire‘s review
  • FT – fair review I think
  • Guardian review
  • MEN Review
  • MEN interview with Björk
  • NewScientist
  • Björk: ‘Manchester is the prototype’– Guardian
  • New York Times review
  • Simon Reynolds on Bjork
  • Manchester Confidential

  • naughty on-stage shot of Bjork with her massive ginger wig on.

I loved the venue, how it was set out (in the round!), the instrumentation. It was everything I expected of Björk live but it did seem somewhat muddled or missing something extra special. I’m glad that she did play some old songs but the fact she did felt like a concession, moving it away from the special theatrical aspect of the show and making it more like a normal gig.

That said however, she was fantastic – her voice is still breathtaking and sounds exactly like her records. Everything is so original and sounds completely unlike anything else. One review mentioned about Björk doing it when Lady Gaga was still in a convent school and I think that’s why I’m so unimpressed by those trying to ‘be original’ now, sorry but Björk got there first and she’s beating you hands down without much effort.

I’m looking forward to the album coming out and the app versions, i’m looking forward to being able to play about with the sounds coming out of the awesome custom instruments that were made specially for it.

That was one fun thing about the gig, ogling these fantastical instruments and wondering when they would be used, and when they were used what would they sound like? The lightning on the opener, Thunderbolt was awesome and the swinging pendulum harp on Solstice was mesmerising.

The crowd too, clearly adored her. Lots of shouting out.

    UPDATE:
Rodney has asked me to mention how hot it was at the gig, which it was – glad they handed out the programs so we could fan ourselves with them. I suppose that’s the only downside to a gig in the late afternoon, what with the sun still being about and not letting the place cool down at all.
