So an important thing I want to pass on to George is music. I think I have actually listened to more music since he was born that in a long time previous!
Something I’ve been thinking about today is going to gigs and festivals and the practicalities involved. There’s a festival on in August I would really like to go to, what with it involving two of my current favourites
George also seems to have a thing in particular for Willy Mason, his songs almost always seem to calm him down nicely in the car.
Here’s his new one (it’s been a long time coming!):
Doing the radio show the day after George was born was really good for me. It unlocked a few things I’d forgotten about. So my aim is to get back on air. I really liked the set up they had at Northern Air so sometime when things have settled at home and I can find the time I’d like to look into how to go about either helping out a bit there or perhaps even having a show.
Just wanted to keep a list of the various bits and bobs we’d bought and found useful:
Ikea Sniglar Cot using this is a side of bed cot (just didn’t put the other side on it) and it’s been working awesomely. It means he gets a good bit of room and it’s much easier than lifting him in and out of a moses basket (which I think he will out grow pretty soon).
Bickiepegs Doidy Cup (Red) we haven’t actually used this yet as he’s too small for it. We were cup feeding when we had to be topping him up so I think it’ll be useful when we start feeding him expressed milk again.
Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Milk Storage Pots x 4 is what we actually tended to feed him with most of the time. They are great because they fit right into the pump and he was able to sip from them with ease. Just make sure you know which ones contain the precious breast milk when you have the in the fridge!
Medela Pre-Sterilised Pump & Save Breastmilk Bags Kate’s sister says these are great and that they can fit onto your pump, we’ve actually bought Boots own-brand one which are about half the price but the packaging says they aren’t good for freezing with. So the Jury’s out on them whilst we see how they’ve coped in the freezer.
George is now 5 weeks old, I’ve been back at work over a week now and that first week was pretty tough. I hadn’t really expected it to be like that but it’s strange how things have changed. I’ve decided to take a day a week off until my leave renews (rather than take it off in one big chunk). He’s changing so much at the moment that i’d rather be at home more often than wait and have a week off or something. Kate’s been busying herself and made it out to several mother & baby groups and that first week I felt like I was missing out. It actually made me quite annoyed but I should be glad I suppose that I was able to take a month off work, rather than just the two weeks paternity leave you get.
I do feel very proud of him and Kate for how she is with him. She’s a wonderful mother and I hope that I can be a good Dad to him. He makes us smile every day and it’s going to be so much fun seeing him grow up.
One thing we’ve ummed and arred about so far is Nappies. We were conscious of the effect on landfill that disposables have so we went with a ‘real’ nappy scheme. Basically you have a wrap, a liner and a towel part, The wrap you wash yourself but you can usually get away with around 3/4 changes before he manages to get poo on it. You bin the liner and towel bit gets collected and washed by the company.
And it all works pretty well. I do think he notices when he’s ‘been’ quicker though and so cries faster and more often but I think that really it’s much more expensive than we expected compared to other options. So we’ll make the switch, a friend’s Dad is able to get us a great deal on nappies and there’s other options such as just4bums where you buy roughly a months worth of of nappys or you could do the Amazon Subscribe & Save option where you commit to buying something regularly.
We were joking yesterday to offset things we should sponsor a tree or something, even better – plant one in our garden.
So I’ve been running a blog of some sort for about 7 years. In that time I’ve graudated uni, gotten married, bought a house and had a son. I’m going to change it’s course slightly or at least explain what the idea is now. Rather than a lifelog style of posting everything I can i’ll be posting things I find inspiring. So they’ll be less but of better quality (in theory!). I was using ifttt.com to do the monkey work but i’ll just have it post the majority of stuff to twitter.
